Concrete Built Right The First Time. Not The Second.

Whether you’re pouring a driveway for the first time or replacing concrete that’s already cracked, the result comes down to one thing: what goes in before the concrete does. Poor excavation, inadequate compaction and rushed base preparation are the biggest reasons concrete cracks, sinks and moves over time. That’s why we build every project from the ground up.

Proper excavation, compaction and reinforcement on every job. No shortcuts underneath.

    The Real Problem

What's Underneath Is What Decides Whether It Lasts

If you’re replacing concrete, you’ve probably seen it already: a driveway, patio or slab that’s only a few years old, already crazing, lifting at the edges, or pooling water after rain. Owners usually blame the concrete. It’s rarely the concrete.

If you’re pouring for the first time, on a new driveway, a fresh slab for an extension, or a shed base, the risk is the same, it’s just ahead of you instead of behind you. The concrete itself is only ever as good as what it’s sitting on.

Hobart’s clay-heavy soil moves. It swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries out, and our winters put it through that cycle hard. If the base underneath isn’t compacted properly, if there’s no reinforcement, or if the pour goes down too thin, the slab has nothing to stop it moving with the ground. That’s when cracks start, and once they start, they don’t stop.

Corner-cutting concreters skip what you can't see to save time. We build the base and reinforcement properly on every job, new pour or replacement, so it doesn't need fixing in three years.

This is the build-up every HCC job gets. Skip a layer and you’re buying concrete that cracks by year two.

    01

    Under-compacted base

Rushed prep leaves soft spots under the slab. Those spots settle first, and the concrete cracks right above them.

    02

    No reinforcement

Skipping steel mesh saves a supplier money on materials. It costs you a slab that can’t hold together once hairline cracks start.

    03

    Wrong mix for the job

Driveways, footpaths and shed slabs all take different loads. The wrong mix or thickness shows up as damage within a couple of seasons.

    How We Work

    Four Steps. No Shortcuts.

This is the same process on every job, whether it’s a driveway, a shed slab or a full outdoor entertaining area.

    01

    Site Assessment & Photos

We check ground conditions, drainage and access, photograph the site beforehand, and give you a fixed, itemised quote based on what your job actually needs.

    02

    Prep, Base & Reinforcement

Removal of old concrete where needed, excavation, compacted road base, formwork and steel mesh, done to the depth your slab needs to carry its load and move with the ground, not against it.

    03

    Pour & Finish

Correct mix, correct thickness, saw-cut control joints, and a finish, broomed, exposed or plain, that suits how the space gets used.

    04

    Cure & Aftercare

Proper curing time before it’s used, plus the option of our annual clean-and-seal aftercare to protect the surface long term.

    Questions We Get Asked

    Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can you come out and quote?

We aim to get on site within a few days of your call. You’ll get a fixed-price quote before any work is booked in, based on what we see on site, not a guess over the phone.

Cheaper quotes usually skip depth, reinforcement or proper base compaction to hit a lower number. Every job we do is built to the National Construction Code and Australian Standards AS 3600 (Concrete Structures), AS 3727.1 (Residential Pavements) and AS/NZS 4671 (steel reinforcing), and covered by a workmanship guarantee. If you find a genuinely cheaper like-for-like quote, we’ll beat it by 5%.

Most residential jobs are poured in one to two days depending on size and access. Full structural cure takes around 28 days, though the surface is generally trafficable well before that. We’ll give you exact timing on your quote.

Yes. Where a permit or engineering sign-off is needed, particularly for structural slabs, we handle that as part of the job so you’re not left chasing paperwork.

An annual clean and reseal of your concrete to protect it from staining, moss growth and weather wear. It’s optional, paid annually, and keeps your slab looking new for years longer than an unsealed surface.

Yes, fully licensed and insured for residential concreting work across Hobart and surrounding areas.
